I have this collection of coffee cans I can&#8217;t bring myself to get rid of, and for some reason I decided to draw a jack-o-lantern face on one. It turned out pretty well, so that evening I cut out the face with a dremel.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 249px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" title=\"Looking Sharp\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-O6nGht3ek3Y\/TpzZkpKd_0I\/AAAAAAAAAWs\/8qx-c6q8O5o\/s400\/IMAG0269.jpg\" alt=\"Looking Sharp\" width=\"239\" height=\"400\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looking Sharp...<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/-yq5WQcy8j54\/TpzZdUdrhII\/AAAAAAAAAYE\/VgBnBHQc3rg\/s400\/IMAG0271.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"239\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">No, the zippo&#39;s not upside down, the picture is.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After that I forgot about it for a while and it seemed like its only reason for existing would be to make me happy I had dug out my zippo a few days earlier. \u00a0But then I stumbled across <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evilmadscientist.com\/article.php\/simplepumpkins\">a post about pumpkins and LEDs<\/a>. \u00a0Perfect! \u00a0I took advantage of my wife&#8217;s spray paint habit (that is, she likes to spray paint stuff, not huff it) and dug up a can conveniently named &#8220;Pumpkin Orange&#8221;. \u00a0Hrmm. \u00a0I suppose it might be made to work.<\/p>\n<p>I had a couple of missteps (my original attempt at highlighting the cuts did not go well), but I got the can fairly well done up.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-hNMdtoSAYbE\/TpzaAMYFCiI\/AAAAAAAAAXk\/ogvUTgJJRLQ\/s400\/IMAG0356.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"239\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ugh. Starting to be able to see that mistake I made in his left eyebrow...<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After a quick &#8220;throw in&#8221; test and\u00a0experimenting with different colors, I decided to use a green LED for highlighting the shape and a flickering LED for ambience. \u00a0I cut a lid out of some old paneling then rigged up the LEDs to it with some screws and binder clips.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-hoDxQL6-Lq0\/TpzZ5CaiqiI\/AAAAAAAAAXY\/-ra3Se3uXgk\/s400\/IMAG0354.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"239\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Better men than I have failed to take a good picture of a lit LED<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Throw the lid on and see how it looks.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-m-HbSxN5gAI\/TpzaBCqCYxI\/AAAAAAAAAXs\/0B5Dp7arj5U\/s400\/IMAG0357.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"239\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The dowel evokes a stem, yes?<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-H7fSmSWFhgw\/TpzZp8kXyiI\/AAAAAAAAAW8\/7P502vTkHd0\/s400\/IMAG0352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"239\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oof. That left eyebrow is looking worse and worse.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And finally a video. \u00a0This whole project really hinges on the flickering &#8220;candle&#8221; LED, it plus the green LED together make it look really good in person<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3xwLaTYlevY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>All in all this was a really satisfying, relatively quick project. \u00a0My daughters loved it. \u00a0I think I&#8217;m going to give them each an appropriately sized piece of paper and let them each draw something I&#8217;ll cut out and they can customize (paint, choose lid, LED color, etc). \u00a0It also seems to have passed my wife&#8217;s crafting muster which is nice.<\/p>\n<p>One unexpected thing &#8211; this has been sitting on my kitchen table for the last 24 hours or so, and it keeps catching my eye, even in daylight. \u00a0I think I&#8217;ve been so conditioned to not leaving candles or other exposed flame going that the flickering is catching my subconscious.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A month or so ago I was hanging out in the garage with my daughters goofing off.
