A quick map of the track layout and the turn numbers. Some of the pictures below refer to the turn numbers, so I thought I'd include this to provide a better sense of where things were.

In the Indianapolics Motor Speedway museum. Dunno anything about this car, but it was too pretty not to be photographed. Plus, being a Ferarri at Indy, it had a better chance of winning the race than a couple of the weekend's entrants.

The number 5 car driven to third place by Nigel Mansell in 1993, probably moved to that spot as a nod to the F1 fans. Behind that is the car Tony Stewart won the 2005 Brickyard 400 in.

Beginning of Qualification! Ferarri's Michael Schumacher entering turn 3. In the background is Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella entering turn 6. This picture gives a nice sense of what we were watching during the race, though these are a little higher up when I took these. Even beyond Fisi in turn 6 you can also see turn 7 in the extreme upper left of the photo

Scuderia Toro Rosa's Scott Speed, first American F1 driver to compete in his home GP since Eddie Cheever in 1989, and first American in the series at all since Michael Andretti in 1993. Of course, he wrecked in turn 2 of lap 1. *sigh*

These are cars from the Indy Pro Series support race. They are coming around turn 6 (in other words, this shot was taken from the stands in the background of the last picture). The 42 is Graham Rahal, son of Bobby Rahal, trying to catch the eye of the F1 guys. He's 17 years old right now, and odds are that he'll be living in Europe next year competing in GP2 (the F1 feeder series). Despite dominating most of the race, he screwed up a restart with a few laps to go and ended up finishing second to Alex Lloyd, driver of the also-shown 26 car.

And yet another support series. These are Formula BMW cars. I don't know anything about these cars but according to my entry list the cars shown are driven by David Garza, followed by Joel Jackson and Scott Schroeder. Fun fact, the #2 car in this race was driven by Frankie Muniz, portrayer of "Malcom" from "Malcom in the Middle". We left before this race ended, but he was moving up in the field when we left.

So yeah, 7 cars ate it on the first lap in turns one and two, including both McLarens (who I was rooting for). I didn't get any good photos of it (none that would look good in reduced size here), but I got a couple that look like a junk yard, 3 or 4 lifters carrying cars off at once. That's Christian Klien's Red Bull car in the foreground there. I think they're going to have a tough time getting that alignment problem cleared up on the left front. That's Franck Montagny's Super Aguri behind it, lined up pretty as a picture. They're actually sitting on turn 4 of the oval, right in front of the drivers coming down the front stretch before they hit turn 1. Someone behind us said they lined them up there as a warning for the other drivers.

Everyone say hi to Kimi's car. I don't know what that is in the cockpit. It looks like a McLaren front wing, but you can clearly see that Kimi's car has its intact. I think it must be Juan Pablo's, which I find hilarious considering they actually hauled JPM's car away to a different part of the track.

Kimi's car agin, at its final resting place. Yep, that's definitely Juan Pablo's front wing.

Ah, that's better, there's its mate, the Aguri of Takumo Sato. I would say that Aguri Suzuki got an upset stomache seeing that, but fortunately he's used to it. Not more pics after this. Schumacher won the race, but Kimi was already blind drunk by that point and Juan Pablo was apparently on the phone w/ Chip Ganassi. Sant and I hoofed it back to the car and git. Great weekend!
